Who is Eligible for Wohngeld?

Wohngeld is a rent subsidy for low-income households. Whether you are eligible depends on several factors: your income, the amount of your rent and the number of household members.

Who Can Apply for Wohngeld?

• Tenants with their own rental contract
• Residents of housing cooperative apartments
• Residents of retirement and nursing homes (inpatient portion)
• Subtenants with their own contract
• People in shared flats with their own rental contract

Basic Requirements

• Your primary residence is in Berlin
• Your total income is below the income limit
• Your rent exceeds the statutory minimum amount
• You do not receive other transfer benefits that exclude Wohngeld
• You are of legal age (or apply as a minor with your own household)

Who is Excluded from Wohngeld?

• Recipients of Bürgergeld or basic income support for the elderly (as housing costs are already covered)
• Trainees and students receiving BAföG or vocational training allowance (generally)
• Persons without their own income who are fully supported by relatives
• Households whose income exceeds the maximum limit

Special Situations

• Wohngeld may also be possible if you receive a pension or have a part-time job alongside Wohngeld
• Foreign nationals may also receive Wohngeld under certain conditions
• Wohngeld can be combined with the child supplement (Kinderzuschlag)
