Wohngeld Berlin: Who is eligible? The key facts

The question 'Am I eligible for Wohngeld?' is the most common one we receive. The answer depends on several factors that we explain clearly here.

Wohngeld is a subsidy for your housing costs that does not have to be repaid. It is calculated according to the Wohngeld Act (WoGG) and depends on your income, your rent and the number of people in your household.

The general rule is: the lower your income and the higher your rent, the more Wohngeld you can receive. The exact calculation is complex, but we give you an initial orientation.

For a single household in Berlin, the income limit is around €1,600 to €1,800 gross per month (depending on the rent level). A family of four has a limit of around €3,500 to €3,800.

Important: Both tenants and owners can apply for Wohngeld. Trainees, students and pensioners are also eligible as long as they stay within the income limits.

Bürgergeld recipients are generally excluded, as housing costs are already included in the standard rate. However, those who are just above the Bürgergeld threshold but still have high rental costs can benefit from Wohngeld.
